With the brain processing visual information at a much faster rate than written information, visually enriched media artefacts with a high emotional content and a story telling format are better placed to win audience attention in short time frames. Visual content also helps an audience to better understand and retain the information being presented.
The overwhelming growth, increasing complexity and amount of information available at any instant means that valuable attention can be lost in a matter of seconds. The creation process for this video infographic blends theoretical perspectives on information design, communication, visual narrative, literacy and rhetoric, and their practical application alongside graphic design, motion design, data visualisation, narration and audio landscapes.
I wanted to explore how art and empathy in information design can be used to create an engaging and persuasive social message. In the context of Covid-19 and its many impacts, this project highlights the emergence of pandemic puppies and the associated animal welfare crisis.
“Empathy, Comprehension and Engagement in Information Design” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Aimee Holly Butler, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
