This project explores the complexities of identity as a mixed-race person, grappling with identifying with multiple communities and being an individual. There is an invisible visibility that comes with being multi-ethnic as it is recognised within creative industries including video games, but not represented wholeheartedly. Creating racially ambiguous artwork poses a dilemma of creative freedom against misrepresentative practice. So as a mixed-race person, I intended to explore one of many possible outcomes for a character’s design that showcases the realities of mixed-race identities through a mix of literal and symbolic interpretations through the visuals. This is aided by the creation of a realistic 3D game character, with high-standard visuals showcasing the importance of accurate cultural representation through higher production quality. Both my Malaysian and Swedish heritage were merged to showcase my identity, thus setting an example of what this industry could be like in a different cultural direction.
"East Meets West: A Cultural Fusion Reflecting Identity With Character Art" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Erika Baunach, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
I wanted to push my technical capabilities in the character art pipeline through a project that is both personally significant, but also relevant to cultural issues within the creative industry.
