Using player feedback loops and design flow, I am working on tailoring a level to a specific type of player, in this case, the ‘conscientious player’.
The conscientious player archetype is based on the work of Nick Yee, whose work looks at a player's gameplay motivations and how they fit with personality types. For example an extraverted person in popular culture is outgoing and may crave excitement more than others and their gaming motivations show this too, often steering more toward action-social style games whereas the focus of my research, the conscientious player, is more forward-thinking, enjoying the challenge and strategy of a game instead, which steers them towards a mastery-achievement style game.
My goal is to take these motivations, create a feedback loop based on them and see if this has an effect on their overall enjoyment of the game. I believe if done correctly, designers might be able to better tailor their games to a specific audience type which is more likely to play their game.
During my time at Abertay and the projects I have worked on, I became really interested in level design and eventually decided that was the career path I would like to take in game development, creating this project is a part of that career path.
“Designing A Level For The Conscientious Player Using Design Flow And Feedback Loops” is a 2020 Digital Graduate Show project by Kallum George Stephen Mullen, a Game Design and Production student at Abertay University.
