The focus areas of this project are illustration and storytelling. The purpose of the project is to capture the light-heartedness and fun of tales of magic, as well as delving into Scottish folklore and fairy tales and bringing some of those long-forgotten creatures back to light. The story of the project itself is as follows:
A series of journals, over 130 years old, which were discovered in 2018 and digitised. These journals were written and illustrated by zoologist Henry Whitlock and detail a year in his life, beginning the day he moves to Edinburgh in May of 1883 and ending abruptly in June of 1884.
At first unaware of the existence of fairies, over the course of the journals Henry stumbles upon many magical creatures and discovers a world long hidden from human eyes, eventually even meeting the Queen of the Fairies herself.
“The Whitlock Journals” is a 2020 Digital Graduate Show project by Kirstin Cook, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
