A beginners guide to creating 3D characters

Synopsis

A guide for other students or beginner artists on how to create stylised AAA characters in a ‘game as a service’ style (World of Warcraft, Fortnite, League of Legends).

The guide details what makes an appealing stylised character whilst also giving workflow advice in order to meet today's rising standards. It covers the technical pipeline that you may follow in industry to get people up to speed in areas that can be tougher to understand (retopology, UVs, baking and rendering) whist also touching on the fundamentals of character design.

Fusing all of this together, the guide takes a user from initial scultping through to renering a game-ready model within Unreal Engine 4.

A beginners guide to creating 3D characters

A beginners guide to creating game-ready 3D characters, focusing on the technical pipeline from Zbrush through to rendering in Unreal Engine 4.

Motivation

I've always loved the process of creating game ready characters and I saw this as an opportunity to not only expand on my own skills, but to put what I've learnt over the years onto paper in a way that may help other students and artists going through the same process I did when I joined Abertay.
