Investigating Storytelling through Pitch Art Practices

Synopsis

Throughout this project, I've used different visual storytelling practices such as keyframe illustration and concept design to find ways to communicate story to the player.
I found that meaning is attributed by (1) the player's cultural and historical experience, (2) the context previously established within the work and (3) by setting a contrast/balance between conventionally pleasing & tension-inducing design principles.

STORY: In a crowded urban-cowboy district, Ez - a lively college dropout runaway - is forced to use their secret power to look back in time and investigate the death of their caregiver. When they get too close, they have to work with suspect no.1 Antag - a closed-off criminal - to save the neighbourhood together and find out the truth.

Investigating Storytelling through Pitch Art Practices

Glimpse In The Past: Investigating the importance of story by creating pitch art of a game narrative to explore story development through visual storytelling practices.

Motivation

I've always wanted to find out how to integrate better storytelling into my designs and images. For the subject matter particularly, I wanted to create a game narrative that does not revolve around fighting yet still features mature themes. The setting itself was inspired by the variety of urban horse cultures across the globe (Philadelphia, LA, Dublin, Palestine, etc.).
