This research project explores Marching Cubes and Dual Contouring for polygonising real-time voxel terrain editors in an effort to understand the proficiencies and drawbacks each algorithm introduces. The project looks into leveraging the GPU to enhance the algorithms in addition to exploring the data structures we can use to manage the underlying voxels. Some of the data structures reviewed include Histopyramids, Bounding Volumes Hierarchy and Octrees. The application allows the user to generate voxel terrain, polygonised through the aforementioned isosurface algorithms, allowing the user to make real-time edits using CSG operations.

I have always been fascinated with terrain generation and amazed at the scope of work achievable through isosurface algorithms. It's an area I have been keen to explore and how it can be utilised for terrain editors.
