This project is a study of the difficulty level in games and how it can be tied into and support narrative themes within the game. The game itself involves themes of powerlessness in the face of overwhelming odds, and the difficulty of making a lot of money in a short amount of time. In it, you must trade with various neutral and faction-associated planets in order to afford a ticket aboard the safe exodus fleet out to the fringes of the galaxy they are in. In addition, the player must avoid potentially angering the various factions by trading with their rivals, and having them come after the player.
I greatly enjoy games that are difficult, and see far too few that use their difficulty in cooperation with the narrative. As such, I wanted to produce a game that does it myself, and see if it can help others form their own ideas about how they can do it within their games.
“Frontier Exodus - Difficulty and Narrative Study” is a 2020 Digital Graduate Show project by Ross Stewart, a Game Design and Production student at Abertay University.
