I have created a world bible for an original 2D animated series pitch titled 'Out of the Woods'. The concept of the comedic cartoon is aimed towards a young adult audience and revolves around ‘the first city fox’ called Maple. Maple’s character draws on my own experience of growing up in a small town and coming to a city as a young adult in an attempt to find my footing within society and the world as a whole. Issues of animal rights are also explored through the use of the anthropomorphic animal characters.
The bible prominently features character design, prop design, environment concepts and storyboards in order to convey its visual tone and message to an audience. I have developed the written material for this project alongside English and Creative Writing student and good friend Ollie Lambert.
I’ve always found the use of anthropomorphic characters in animation an interesting storytelling tool. I’m also a big lover of animals, so exploring issues of animal rights through the use of anthropomorphism made sense.
I was very much inspired by my experience in Dundee, having come for university from a small town. I took this project as an opportunity to reflect upon my last 5 years here, how I’ve changed and grown through the people I’ve met and how the city has shaped me into the person I am today.
“Out of The Woods - 2D Animated Series World Bible” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Ruairidh Brunton, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
