In many games AIs are allowed to 'cheat'. This ensures the game is fun and challenging for the player. However, in general, players don't like it when they are 'cheated' out of a victory. This project explored what players considered cheating and looked at their reaction to certain 'cheats'. During gameplay, analytics were collected describing how a player performed. Then, they were directed to a survey to give detailed answers to a range of questions. The results could then be used to better design AI in future single player games.
"Evaluating the effect of a cheating opponent on a human player" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Shaun Meechan, a Computer Game Applications Development student at Abertay University.
I am a big fan of RTS games and it's widely regarded that the AI in these games cheat. I have always wondered why this is the case and how the developers approached this. I am also interested in AI in general and how believable AI can be created.
