With the continuous quest of enhancing player immersion, evolving game environments are becoming increasingly more popular. Trees are a common part of game scenes however are often static and pre-made models. This project compares two algorithms, commonly used for the procedural generation of trees, and adapts them to work in real-time. The models are also altered to affect the generated trees shapes, depending on their surroundings and habitat. The goal is to find a balance between visual appeal and performance impact and create a model that can be used within any game environment.
'Procedurally generating, environmentally responsive trees.' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Stylianos Zachariou, a Computer Game Applications Development student at Abertay University.
I had an interest in procedural generation and wanted to try something new. I was thinking about what my project would be when I looked out the window to the big trees on our campus. I was immediately inspired to create something that beautiful for my project.
