My research project is about developing a board game that is based on an existing intellectual property, ('Avatar: the Last Airbender' TV show), and how it can be used as a form of transmedia storytelling, to adapt and expand on the elements introduced in the source text and keep the audience engaged. To achieve this, my research will focus on understanding the concept of transmedia storytelling, as well as its purposes and processes. Then, it will look at existing board games that are based on other intellectual properties, in order to inform practice and broaden my knowledge of what has already been done, what worked, and what didn't. Finally, I will create a board game through a series of development cycles where I will design, test, and iterate with the help of a group of play testers. The final product should be thematically faithful to the source text but provide a unique experience in its own right.
"Exploring Transmedia Extensions through Board Games" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Tobias Terrero, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.
My love and passion for board games and the 'Avatar: the Last Airbender' TV show, and trying to combine those two interests into a singular project. It's an idea that I have been ruminating on even before the start of my Honours project. I also find the concept of adaptation and translating a story from one medium to another fascinating.
