Why study our Graduate Entry Accelerated LLB Law degree?

This accredited Graduate Entry LLB degree is a two-year law course - perfect if you have a degree already and want to get an undergraduate degree in Law.

It's designed for graduates from any discipline who now want to study law and work in the Scottish legal profession. You’ll complete the full LLB in two years instead of four, covering all the subjects required by the Law Society of Scotland.

Think like a lawyer

You won’t just learn the rules of law – you’ll learn to think like a lawyer. Through case analysis, problem-solving and legal research, you’ll develop the skills to read complex material, build arguments and give clear, structured advice.

Develop an in-depth knowledge of Scots law

If you have an undergraduate degree in another subject, our two-year accelerated Law degree gets your career started in the Scottish legal profession. This means you’ll gain a critical understanding of the theories, concepts and principles behind the Scottish legal system. Along the way, you’ll be actively encouraged to enhance your CV with extracurricular activities like pro bono work and the mooting club.

Why study your accelerated Law degree here?

  • Small class sizes mean we can support and guide you personally.

  • Learning based around employability. This includes moot courts, negotiation exercises, legal drafting and presentations.

  • Save time and money by studying an undergraduate law degree condensed into two years* instead of four.

  • Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland.

  • On campus teaching, with in-person lectures and tutorials.

  • Contemporary curriculum, reflecting the impact of globalisation, digital technologies, and socio-political change on current legal practice.

  • Our four-year LLB is ranked top in Scotland for student satisfaction in Law (Complete University Guide 2025). On this accelerated degree, you’ll study the same core modules and be taught by the same academic staff.

As per the requirements of the Law Society of Scotland and the Faculty of Advocates, you’ll gain the legal skills and knowledge you need to join the Scottish legal profession**.

Our Law course ranks TOP in Scotland and No. 3 in the UK for Student Satisfaction. It's also the TOP UK Modern for Graduate Prospects, according to the 2025 Complete University Guide.

*Undergraduate LLB Law degrees in Scotland normally take four years.
**After further studies. A Diploma in Professional Legal Practice is the normal next step for practice in Scotland.

Which legal subjects will I study?

Across the two years, you’ll study the core foundation subjects for the Scottish legal profession, including Legal Systems and Methods, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Contract, Delict, Criminal Law and Evidence, EU Law, Family Law, Property and Commercial Law, plus Succession (including Trusts).

What is mooting?

A moot court competition is a mock court hearing (usually an appeal against a final decision). It's an essential part of your learning experience.

  • You'll regularly take part in internal mooting competitions and friendly moots with other institutions from your first year.

  • We hosted the inaugural Dundee Moot Cup in 2024 (which will run annually). The final was held at Dundee Sheriff Court.

  • In 2024 an Abertay team made it to the quarter finals of the Lord Jones National Moot Competition and the semi-finals in 2023.

Potential legal careers

You’ll graduate with excellent employment prospects. Many graduates become solicitors and barristers, paralegals or legal academics. Others move into areas such as:

  • The court service.

  • The police.

  • The civil service.

  • Law centres or advice bureaus.

  • Banks and financial services.

  • Journalism.

And some use their legal knowledge to set up their own businesses. The transferable skills gained during your degree will make you highly sought-after by employers.

Building key skills

Advocacy skills are central to being a good lawyer.

This involves critical thinking, problem-solving and the ability to explain complex concepts in a simple way. Being part of a Moot Club helps to build your confidence, enhance your public speaking skills and learn about court etiquette.

Doing pro bono work is a great addition to your CV. We encourage you to get involved with organisations like The Tayside & Perthshire Law Project (Tayper). Tayper gives the local community greater access to legal help and enhances your CV at the same time.

How the Course Works

Learning and assessment

You’ll learn through a mix of on-campus lectures, small-group tutorials and practical exercises such as moots, negotiations and simulated client interviews, with close support from academic staff. You’ll be assessed through a blend of exams and coursework, including:

  • Problem-based questions

  • Essays

  • Presentations

  • Oral advocacy

Each is designed to test your knowledge of Scots law and develop the research, analysis and communication skills used in legal practice.

We recognise that our students have different learning styles and different skills when they start their studies. Our aim is to ensure that we nurture and reinforce understanding of the subjects studied, together with the research and employability skills required in a constantly changing world.

On campus learning

Modules are delivered in-person on campus. They typically have three contact hours per module per week, usually comprising a two-hour lecture and a one-hour tutorial. The one-hour tutorial may sometimes be replaced by practical exercises, online quizzes, discussion forums, drop-in sessions etc.

Study hours

Research has shown that after medicine, the study of law requires the highest number of study hours. This means you’ll need to devote a significant number of hours/week to your studies. The majority of your time will be spent in self-directed study and research. This is an intensive, full-time programme, so plan to treat it like a full-time job in terms of study hours.

Graduate visa changes and limitations

Please note: the UK government has made changes to international students' Graduate visa entitlement. The length of the visa has been reduced to two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 or 18 months if you apply on or before 1 January 2027.

Unfortunately, this may not allow enough time to complete a legal traineeship (as a traineeship is two years). It is impossible to qualify as a solicitor in Scotland without having successfully completed the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice and thereafter a traineeship.

Find out more about Graduate visa durations on the gov.uk website

International applicants must keep this in mind when they apply to study law in Scotland.

Support for Ukrainian students

We're keen to offer help to Ukrainian students who may wish to transfer from their existing institution in Ukraine or to register with us as new students for intake in September. There will be no tuition fees charged for the duration of the degree programme, as those with refugee status are treated as ‘Home/Scottish’ students and will also have access to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland bursary and student loans. Our Recruitment Team can help guide applicants.
