Abertay University hosts STEM Discovery Day for school pupils to inspire next generation of tech leaders

300 Dundee school pupils take part in interactive workshops and activities

Abertay University recently welcomed 300 students from schools across the Tayside area for an inspiring event aimed at encouraging young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Held on Thursday 16 January 2025, the event was organised in collaboration with the Abertay cyberQuarter, SmartSTEMs, and Computacenter, offering pupils a diverse range of hands-on activities related to these important disciplines.

Designed for pupils aged 10 to 14, the initiative provided an opportunity to explore the exciting world of science and technology while also equipping teachers with innovative methods to engage their classes.

Throughout the day, groups of pupils from the 10 Tayside schools visited a range of interactive stands and workshops, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and creative problem-solving activities, offering them the chance to explore different aspects of STEM in a fun and engaging environment.

Abertay teaching staff also engaged with the pupils by delivering customised workshops in their specialised fields. These interactive sessions explored a variety of fascinating topics, such as games development, cybersecurity, forensic science, and civil engineering.

A group of cyber and tech employers also participated in the event, setting up stands where pupils could engage with them and inquire about career opportunities. Among the participating organisations were Abertay cyberQuarter partners ScotlandIS, NCR Atleos, among others.

Professor Lynne Coventry, Director of the cyberQuarter, said:

I was thrilled to welcome these bright young minds to Abertay. Engaging with students through STEM outreach is crucial for inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. It was wonderful to see the pupils and their teachers enjoying a great time learning about potential careers in STEM and exploring the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
