All of the current employees at Fertility Genomics have Abertay University connections: one is currently a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and two are former lecturers in Biomedical and Forensic Sciences. Given these connections, we wanted to give back to Abertay and the students studying there by offering a Santander Internship to an Abertay student. This would allow a student to experience working for a company either before or immediately after they graduated, thus utilising and reinforcing their skill set and knowledge gained during their degree. This would also allow the student to determine that this was indeed the area in which they wished to pursue as a career while also giving them work experience that they could add to their CV.
We decided that an internship would be useful because having an intern would also allow us to learn new skills from them and help us understand and improve in areas that we are not experts in such as marketing and website design. This in turn would help us and our company grow and become successful.

As scientists, we had a limited understanding of the marketing required to launch and run a successful online business, therefore having an intern who was studying for a degree in this area benefitted us immensely.
Our intern was Ondrej Dlask, a 3rd year BA (Hons) Marketing and Business student at Abertay who was extremely knowledgeable about marketing strategies and all the different social media platforms. He also had an excellent eye for detail, graphics and layouts which is extremely important in this visual online world in which we now live and was especially helpful as our business is based online.
We were so impressed by Ondrej that he has become a permanent member of our team and will be working with us full-time once he completes his degree. Therefore we not only benefited from a skilled individual helping us with getting Fertility Genomics ready for launching, but we also now have a new member of our team.
We have been impressed by Ondrej’s skills, knowledge and work ethic, so we know from what we have seen during and since his internship that Ondrej will continue to help us grow and develop the business. Ondrej has helped us develop new skills as well as understand the importance of marketing and how to get our company’s name out into the world. Therefore, one of the significant benefits of the internship is that it will help develop Fertility Genomics into a successful company that will ultimately help us achieve our goal of assisting individuals and couples struggling with infertility to hopefully achieve their dream of having children.
